Benjamin Franklin Bowden Sr. was born on August 28, 1933 in Campbellton, Florida, in Jackson County. Affectionately known as “Bubba” to his family and close friends, he grew up in Campbellton before leaving to serve his country honorably in the United States Army. After his military service, he returned to his hometown, where he fell in love with his bride, Blanche Olds Bowden. Together, they shared more than 59 years of marriage and raised four children.
Dad was a hardworking, devoted family man who often reminded us that his family was the most important part of his life. Having grown up without his father, he understood deeply the importance of being present for his children. He would say, “I would never leave my kids under any circumstances.” Even today, remembering those words brings chills. They were more than a promise; they reflected the love and commitment he showed us throughout his life.
That same loyalty extended to his friends and fishing buddies. He treated others with grace and kindness, and when you saw him coming, you could count on a smile, a joke, or something funny to brighten your day. He rarely complained. Instead, he encouraged his children by saying, “Don’t complain. Do something about it.”
He leaves to cherish memory four children: Denise Young (Vincent), Jacqueline Hunter, Cynthia Franklin, (Milton) and Benjamin F. Bowden, Jr.; many grandchildren: Tracey Hunter, Daniel Noel, William L. Hunter, Jamar Franklin, Victoria Weatherington, Jeri Franklin, Benjamin Bowden lll, Brittany Franklin, Nicole Bowden, Jasmine Franklin, Octavian Mount, Hakeem Bell; sister: Eula Mae McCalister (Harry) and a host of great-grandchildren, who loved him dearly.
Dad taught us the value of hard work through his example. You could often find him on his spreader truck, working long hours and weekends. At other times, he would be selling water-melons beside the road. Whatever it took to provide for his family, he was willing to do. We never heard Dad say he was tired.
Above all, Dad believed in keeping his word. He taught us that when you make a promise, you stand by it. His honesty, determination, and love are lessons we will carry with us always.
Dad, we gather today to honor your life, salute your service, and remember all that you stood for. Thank you for your sacrifices, your laughter, and the steady love you gave our family. Rest peacefully, knowing that you are deeply loved and will always be remembered. Well done, Well done!
