Jane Marie Smith, 81, of Jackson County, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on January 15, 1945, in Altus, Oklahoma, Jane was the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Henderson) Williams. She moved to Jackson County in 1968, where she built a life full of love, laughter, and community service.
Jane worked for over 30 years as a schoolteacher at Jackson County Elementary, where she touched the lives of hundreds of students. Her passion for education and her warm spirit were an inspiration to all who knew her. After retiring in 2005, she dedicated her time to volunteering at the local library, tending her beloved garden, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Altus, where she sang in the choir for more than 40 years.
Jane is survived by her husband of 56 years, William “Bill” Smith; her daughters, Carol Smith-Johnson (David) of Lawton and Patricia Smith (Michael Reed) of Oklahoma City; her son, James Smith (Angela) of Altus; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Thomas Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Altus. Burial will follow at Altus City Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, August 28, from 5–7 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jackson County Public Library in Jane’s memory.
