Rodger Wayne Avriett, age 80, passed away peacefully at home on October 4, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.
Born in Hamilton County, Florida, Rodger was a devoted family man whose kindness, strength, and steady presence touched the lives of everyone who knew him. After graduating from Jennings High School in 1963, he began his career with the State Road Department, now known as the Florida Department of Transportation. In that role, he helped survey land throughout the Florida Panhandle, contributing to the development of what would become Interstate 10.
In September 1965, Rodger was drafted into the United States Army. He proudly served in Würzburg, Germany, with the 3rd Infantry Division, 3rd Supply and Transportation Company, as a supply clerk. His faith remained an important part of his life as he was a member of the Church of Christ.
Rodger met the love of his life, Laura, and they married in 1969. They shared 52 years of marriage and built a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories. In 1970, he began working for Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and continued his career with CSX Railroad, retiring in 2004 as a Footboard Yardmaster. He was also an avid University of Florida Gators fan.
Rodger will be lovingly remembered for his devotion to his family, quiet strength, and the many ways he cared for those around him. Although his absence will be deeply felt, his memory will remain a lasting comfort to all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his children, Pam Cain (Jimmy) and Rodger W. “Bubba” Avriett Jr. (Crystal); his grandchildren, Emily Goodwin (Zach), Amber Basford (Parker), Christine Cain (Christian), Kaylee Smith (Levi), and Autumn Applewhite (Cole); and his great-grandchildren, Brett and Charlie Goodwin, Paxton and Paisley Basford, Gunnar and Lainey King, Nate Applewhite, and Corbin Smith. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bobby Black as well as a host of beloved nieces and nephews and his faithful companion/dog Abby, who remained by his side.
Rodger was preceded in death by his parents, George and Catherine Avriett, his wife Laura Edwards Avriett and his siblings, Eloise Shadrick, Shirley Black, and Charles Avriett.
