Wallace “Jerry” Gerald Howell, age 74, of Sneads, Florida passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Jackson Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Sneads, Florida, Jerry called Howell Road home for his entire life. He graduated from Sneads High School in 1971 and briefly served in the United States Army before receiving an honorable discharge.
Jerry, or “Vern,” as he was more commonly known, was a hardworking man who loved the land. He farmed throughout his life, growing seasonal fruits and vegetables that he proudly shared and sold at local farmers’ markets. He especially loved making sure his family and friends were supplied with the season’s harvest. He was an avid member of the Jackson County Farmers Market, where he spent many happy hours doing something he truly loved.
He was a man of simple pleasures and strong preferences. He loved his Ford trucks and only drove Fords—including his beloved Ford tractor. He enjoyed listening to Gulf 104, taking slow drives down the backroads, and watching RFD-TV and Miami football. He was never in a hurry, but he was always on time. And if you knew Vern, you knew that he was almost always smiling. That smile was simply part of who he was.
Aside from farming, perhaps his greatest joy was his family and especially his grandchildren. One of his favorite pastimes was watching his grandbabies participate in their activities and events. Whether sitting at a ballgame, watching a school activity, or simply being there to support them, he was happiest when he was watching the people he loved most.
Professionally, Vern retired from Aramark after serving as the Groundskeeper at Florida State Hospital. Through his work, his farming, and his everyday life, he was a hardworking and dependable man who found joy in the simple things, his land, his family, his community, and the life he had always known on Howell Road. He will be remembered for his generous heart, his love of family, his love of the land, and that smile that so many will never forget.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Ford Howell and Mary Ellen Farrior as well as one brother, William “Billy” Henry Howell.
Jerry is survived by his two loving daughters, Brandi Wynn and husband, Ted of Sneads, Florida, and Amanda “Mandi” Howell of Sneads, Florida; brother, Henry Howell of Sneads, Florida; sister, Diane Beauchamp of Gainesville, Florida; three grandchildren, Raegan Howell, Maxton Baxley and Chason Baxley; a very special cousin, Jason Howell; as well as many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” John 14:27-28.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, October 12, 2026 at Sneads Assembly of God Church with Pastor Bill Mayo officiating.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 1:00 P.M., until the time of service at Sneads Assembly of God Church.
Services are entrusted to the Lambe Family at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.
